Leopoldstadt is a play by Sir Tom Stoppard that opened on January 25, 2020, at Wyndham's Theatre in London. Leopoldstadt was the old, congested Jewish district of Vienna at the start of the 20th century. Hermann Merz, a company manufacturer and a baptized Jew who is married to Catholic Gretl, has improved his position in life. Hermann's large family is at the heart of Tom Stoppard's massive yet intimate drama, which takes place in a trendy area of the metropolis. This play passes through the convulsions of war, revolution, poverty, annexation by Nazi Germany, and – for Austrian Jews – the Holocaust in which 65,000 of them were murdered before we said goodbye to this family.
