Rossini's most colorful orchestral writing is found in this opera, but it doesn't overwhelm. The quaint overture ends with a whisper of pizzicato strings that are surprisingly restrained and unassuming for such a work as this one.

Although it was performed by numerous production houses all over the world, it didn't see its premiere at the iconic Metropolitan Opera in New York until 2011, when it was performed in a live HD broadcast on April 9.
