After he experimented with hip-hop production, Lane 8 developed his trademark sound that combined electronica and hazy glitch-pop. This sound caught the attention of A&R executive Jody Wisternoff, who signed Lane 8 to the record label Anjunadeep in 2013. Lane 8 then released music on Soundcloud in 2014, a prelude to his 2015 debut album Rise. Following positive critical reception, Lane 8 embarked on the "This Never Happened" tour in 2016. Audiences were strictly prohibited from filming the show with their phones or cameras. It was Lane 8’s hope that this would force fans to pay more attention to the performance.
