Lakeside is an R&B and funk band from Ohio most known for their 1980 number one hit “Fantastic Voyage.” The band formed in the early 70s out of the ashes of the groups The Nomads, The Montereys and The Young Underground. The original lineup featured Stephen Shockley, Mark Wood, Thomas Shelby and Otis Stokes.
Lakeside got their big break in the mid 70s when they were noticed by star producer and promoter Dick Griffey while playing Maverick Flats. Griffey had achieved fame promoting legendary artists like Stevie Wonder, and it was through Griffey’s connections that the band would sign to Spec-O-Lite Productions in 1977. They released their self-titled debut album later that year, which earned the band a celebrated appearance on Soul Train.
Lakeside rose to fame through their 1978 album Shot of Love, which reached the number four spot on the R&B charts. Their greatest success came with Fantastic Voyage in 1980, which contained a number one hit song and was certified platinum. They would produce another top ten hit with their funk rendition of the Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” Lakeside tickets put you in front of the stage to see these funky hit-makers live in concert.
