The team was created in 1966 and won both of their first two games. The team was off to a strong start, finishing their first season with an impressive 3:1 win/loss ratio. They showed no signs of slowing down, and in 1968 the Lakers made an appearance in the NAIA Ice Hockey Tournament.

In 1971 the Lakers became one of the first teams to join the newly formed Central Collegiate Hockey Association. They would win their first-ever National Championship against Gustavus Adolphus. Still, the Lakers' most successful season was yet to come. Two years later they would win the NAIA Championship a second time, as well as winning a CCHA playoff and being selected for the National Invitation Tournament.
