Born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1980, Biali learned to play the piano as a child. She trained in classical piano for a number of years before studying at the Royal Conservatory of Music as a young woman. During her time there, she developed an interest in jazz, soon moving to Toronto to earn a degree in jazz performance from Humber College.
Laila Biali then released her debut album Introducing the Laila Biali Trio, moving to New York City to work as a session musician for a number of high-profile musicians. She has recorded and toured with the likes of Suzanne Vega and Chris Botti. Biali rose to prominence, however, with the 2010 release of her album Tracing Light. The album earned the artist a Juno Award nomination, greatly increasing her exposure. By 2018, Biali had won the Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year.
