Then, returning in a more melancholy tone as she sings, backed up by Jimmy Powers on the piano and tells stories from her life while getting increasingly intoxicated and incoherent. Billie Holiday's story was brought to life in April 2014, when it opened on Broadway at Circle in the Square. Lonny Price was the director, and Audra McDonald played Billie Holiday. Jimmy Powers was portrayed by Shelton Becton, a pianist with whom she had an on-again, off-again relationship. The sets and costumes are by James Noone, with lighting by Robert Wierzel and sound design by Steve Canyon Kennedy.
