La Sonora Dinamita is a Colombian group that specializes in Cumbia, a type of South and Latin American dance music that has become popular in all of Latin America and enjoyed success throughout the world. La Sonora Dinamita is credited with being one of the first cumbia groups to have international appeal.
The group was originally formed in 1960 in Cartagena de Indias under the direction of Lucho Argain. The group disbanded in 1963 but then was reformed in 1975 under the direction of bandleader Julio Ernesto Estrada “Fruko” Rincon, who was also the artistic director of the Discos Fuentes record label. In 1981, the now-classic single “Mi Cucu” was introduced from their first successful album “La Cumbia Naco En Baru.” The group’s lineup has changed throughout the years but a strong female voice is always featured. Past lead singers include Margarita Vargas, nicknamed La Diosa de la Cumbia. Other singers include Melda Yara, Susana Valesquez and Vilma Diaz, who is known as La Diva de La Cumbia as well as other lead singers.

In the early 2000s, the group experienced some global success, with the release in 2003 of “A Mover el Cu,” as well as “Universal Cumbia,” released in 2005. These albums were very influential on younger performers and led to a revitalization of Cumbia around the world.
