The Jazz Ensemble has three big bands, six combo groups and classes that consist of arranging, composition, improvisation, jazz history, theory and pedagogy. The KU Jazz groups have been winning awards since 1992 and often hold their performances in the Lied Center of Kansas or the Swarthout Recital Hall.
Ensemble I is the first of the jazz groups that KU offers. The group performs all manner of jazz, especially seasonal favorites right around the holidays. Jazz Ensemble I will often have guest stars perform alongside them. In the past, guest stars have included vocalist Vanessa Thomas, Chilean jazz guitarist Camila Meza, Canadian jazz trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, trombonist John Fedchock and many others.
