Kagel is known for performing Kirtans, which is a type of Indian devotional music that chants the names of God. He has released more than 15 albums since 1996 and authored two books.

While Kagel was attending college at State University of New York at Stony Brook, he was briefly the lead singer of a group of students in high school and college on Long Islands in 1967. After he quit, that group would become Blue Oyster Cult. In 1970 he traveled to India, where he became a disciple of the guru Neem Koroli Baba, also called Maharaja-Ji. After his conversion, he changed his name to Krishna Das.
