It is a Halloween-themed event in which the theme park is transformed into "160 acres of terror," with a succession of roaming monsters, frightening mazes, and 'scare zones.' It was the first, biggest, and longest-running Halloween event to be hosted at a theme park.
The original three-night affair, held October 26-28, 1973, has now become a six-week-long event. In a meeting in September 1973, George Condos and Martha Boyd of the marketing department, Bill Hollingshead and Gary Salisbury of the entertainment office, and John Day and Bob Gurney of Park Management presented the idea. The first Halloween Haunt was a success, and the event sold out every night swiftly after. The inspiration for Knott's Berry Farm came from Calico, California, a ghost town created during the California silver rush. This area would be the designated Ghost Town sector for the original Halloween Haunt, eventually expanding to the entire park.
