He was born in 1953 in Selma and developed an interest in music at an early age. When he was twelve, Brown trained under famed Delta blues artist Mississippi Joe Callicott. Brown's sound is heavily influenced by Callicott and by artists like Johnny Shines and Junior Kimbrough.
In the early 1970s, Brown began playing professionally with artists like Johnny Woods and R.L. Burnside, with the guitarist collaborating heavily with Burnside in particular on the latter's 1990s recordings. Brown released his debut solo album Goin' Back to Mississippi in 1996, which rock and roll legend Dale Hawkins produced.
Brown then embarked on a celebrated tour in 2003 in which he played alongside the acclaimed blues-rock band Widespread Panic. The artist's growing reputation saw him enlisted to provide music for the 2006 film Black Snake Moan, in which he also acted in a cameo role.
