He is known primarily as a one-man band, blending bluegrass, folk, alternative rock and other elements into his songs, playing along to a live phrase loop.
He picked up the guitar while a teenager and then attended Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach, graduating with a theater degree. He then relocated to Colorado to pursue music. Though he mainly plays solo, he has toured with such acts as the Yonder Mountain String Band, the String Cheese Incident, Umphrey’s McGee and Ratdog.
He has frequently performed at festivals such as the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, the AllGood Music Festival and the Elysian Fields Music Festival. He has released over 20 albums, both as a solo artist and with other artists and acts. His first solo album was Freek, in 1994.
