Katsura Sunshine is the stage name for Gregory Robic, a Canadian theatre producer, television personality and storyteller. Robic was born in 1970 in Ontario and studied classical literature at the University of Toronto. During his time at the university, Robic encountered the comedies of ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes and fell in love with comedic storytelling. He assisted the school’s Department of Classics with translations, adaptations and performances of many of Aristophanes’ works.
In 1994 the Poor Alex Theatre performed Gregory Robic’s adaptation of Aristophanes’ The Clouds, which was met with widespread critical acclaim and ran for over a year. He has since produced various works including Lysistrata, Assemblywomen and Allegra’s Magic Flute.
Robic began training in traditional Japanese rakugo storytelling under Katsura Bunshi VI in 2008. The art form involves a lone storyteller unaccompanied by props or a set regaling the audience with long and often complicated comedic stories. Robic made his rakugo debut in 2009 and has since performed rakugo across the world in countries such as France, Australia and Hong Kong.
