The members had known each other since their teenage years and had been making music together since the early 90s. They enjoyed mild success in the group Psycholyric in the late 90s but formed Kasta in 1999 following a slew of lineup changes. Kasta gave their first live performance at the Duncan and Comanchero rap club in Rostov-on-Don. The members are Vladi Valerievich, Shyam Olegovich, Khamil Leonidovich and Zmey Mishenin.
In 2002 Kasta released their debut album Louder than Water, Taller than Grass. Though the album met with positive reviews, it would take until the group’s 2004 album Dank Kush for them to break through to mainstream attention. Dank Kush earned the group the Russian MTV Music Award for Best Hip-Hop/Rap Project. They have since earned several additional accolades including the Muz-TV Award for Best Hip-Hop/Rap Project, the Russian Street Award for Best Acoustic and the Legend of MTV Award for their influence on Russia’s music culture.
