The orchestra primarily plays at the Kaufman Center for the Performing Arts, which is located in downtown Kansas City, Mo., at 16^th and Broadway, close to the Power & Light District. The Kaufman Center opened in 2011 and has two auditoriums. The Helzberg Hall can accommodate 1,600 people and the Muriel Kaufman Theatre has a capacity of 1,800.

The orchestra was founded in 2003 by Jim Mair and Gene Hall after inspiration from other jazz orchestras throughout the United States. Mair is originally from Manitoba, Canada and plays woodwinds, brass and percussion as well as being a singer.

The orchestra’s debut event was in 2003. They began with theme events and a two-concert subscription season. From its inception, the group has incorporated youth outreach and education into its strategy.

By 2008, the orchestra had grown into an 18-piece band, performing tributes to Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Kansas City jazz great Count Basie, among others. The group previously performed at Unity Temple on the Country Club Plaza but moved, first to the historic Folly Theatre, before landing at the Kaufman Center as of 2018.
