A diverse musician whose releases include jazz-funk albums and electronic projects, Kamaal Williams was born Henry Wu in Peckham, London. He became a multi-instrumentalist during his teenage years and converted to Islam in 2011, adopting the name Kamaal. Under the name Henry Wu, he began creating a hybrid of jazz, house, and electronic music in 2012, building his audience with albums like Stir Fry Beats (2012), Natural Complexion (2014), Negotiate EP (2015), Good Morning Peckham (2015), Crucial Wu (2015), 27 Karat Years (2016) and Deep in the Mind (2017). His music often plays by combining different genres of music including jazz, funk and hip hop.
In 2016, he teamed up with drummer Yussef Dayes to form the jazz-funk duo Yussef Kamaal. Although the band split up after releasing the debut album Black Focus. Williams continued recording music on his own by founding his own record label, Black Focus Records. Through his own label, he issued a string of solo albums like 2018's The Return and 2020's Wu Hen. The Return was well received by fans and critics alike and reached number 63 on the UK music charts.
