Starting in 1964, Canadian music magazine RPM polled its readers to determine which artists and groups they considered the best in Canada. Record label owner After Stan Klees met with RPM founder, they planned a formal music industry awards ceremony. Instead of just publishing the award results in RPM, presentations would be made at a physical venue. The first ceremony took place on February 23, 1970, and was tentatively labeled the Gold Leaf Awards. More than a year after the show, RPM magazine invited its readers to suggest new names for the group. With the help of the fans, the Juno Awards was named in honor of Pierre Juneau, the first president of the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications commission. In 1974, Canadian Music Awards Association representatives of the music industry who established the Junos created and renamed it in 1975.
