Markl's professional career began in earnest in 1991, when he was hired as the director for the Saarländisches Staatstheater. His success as the venue’s conductor saw him appointed as the director of the opera at the Mannheim National Theatre three years later, and Markl became known for his talent with operas in particular. His budding reputation earned him two appearances conducting the Metropolitan Opera, first with Il Trovatore in 1999 and again with Turandot the following year.
The conductor’s most celebrated work has been with the Orchestre National de Lyon however, which he directed for six years.
