Valadez was born in 1950 in Paracuaro, Michoacan, and wrote his first song when he was 13 at the suggestion of a teacher. His interest in music grew as he sang in his local church choir, and by 1965 he had made his television debut singing on Noches Rancheras. After working as a bar singer for a number of years, Valadez signed to RCA Victor, through which he released his debut album El Alma Joven… in 1971. The album would be certified gold, and made Valadez a celebrity through its lead single “No Tengo Dinero.”
