Johnson was attending grad school and studying math and computer science when an open mic night at Conor Byrne Pub in Seattle changed the trajectory of his life. He met and collaborated with some like-minded musicians, and they went on to form an indie/folk band named The Head and the Heart. The band toured the world and sold out venues such as Red Rocks and The Filmore. In 2011, they debuted their self-titled album and it went gold. In 2013, they released Let’s Be Still and it made it to the Top 10 Albums Chart on Billboard. While recording their third album, Signs of Light, Johnson’s drug habit caught up with him and he checked himself into rehab. He would spend the next five years outside the music industry, although he still wrote songs he had no plans to release.
