Born in Memphis in 1972, Sappington showed a talent for music at a young age. He learned to play drums and guitar as a boy, then in the early 90s fronted the regionally successful heavy metal band BlackBone. He left BlackBone to join Saliva in 1996, whose eponymous debut album of the following year was a runaway success. The album earned the group a deal with Island Records, through which they released their follow-up albums Every Six Seconds and Back into Your System. 

Back into Your System proved the band’s most popular release, reaching within the top 20 on the Billboard 200. The album’s song “Always” became a number one hit on Billboard’s Modern Rock chart. In the years that followed, Sappington enjoyed a successful career in film and on television through supporting roles in Wanted and Hustle & Flow, among others.
