He lost his father at the age of six and was raised by his mother and 11 brothers and sisters. He did not learn to read until he was an adult because he wanted to read the Bible. Rodriguez and his family also lived in exile in Ecuador for a few years, since his mother participated in the revolt against Marcos Perez Jiminez by hiding weapons and politicians in her home. Without any academic formation, Rodriguez shaped himself as a singer and actor by empirical means.
In 1974, Rodriguez was chosen by Venevision to represent Venezuela in the third edition of the prestigious OTI Festival, which was held in Acapulco, Mexico. His song “Vuelvete” (Return) found a warm reception, and he ended up winning third place for his country. He was able to build a fan base in the late 1960s and early 70s. He was in a commercial and a telenovela throughout those years. He later made a telenovela of his own. He has since participated in the Latin American Spanish version of the movie Meet the Robinsons. He has also joined the miniseries Gabriel's cast and was a judge and voice trainer on the Argentinian version of The Voice.
