Jorge Drexler was born in Montevideo in 1964. Drexler, like most of his family, studied medicine. He became an ear, nose and throat specialist, setting aside his passion for the art of singing and songwriting and playing various musical instruments. Some of these instruments include the illustrious chordophone, the piano, which he learned to play at the age of five, and, years later, the guitar. Drexler also took a few riveting music theory and composition classes which further inspired his musical side.

Drexler’s musical career began in 1996. He is the first Uruguayan to win an Academy Award, which he won after composing The Motorcycle Diaries’ single, “Al Otro Lado Del Rio.” Drexler recorded two albums while taking a hiatus to backpack through Brazil. He has been nominated for five Grammy Awards for his albums Eco, 12 Segundos De Oscuridad, Cara B , Bailar En La Cueva  and Salvavidas De Hielo.
