The franchise was founded in 1990 as the Dearborn Magic in Dearborn, Mich. The name of the franchise changed twice, to the Michigan Nationals and then the Dearborn Heights Nationals before the team relocated to St. Louis and became the St. Louis Sting in 1996. The team would move several more times before finally settling in Johnstown, Penn., in 2012, replacing the departed Johnstown Chiefs of the ECHL.
