Rivers is best known for the seven hit singles that he released between 1964 and 1968. The singles included “Memphis”, “Mountain of Love”, “The Seventh Son”, “Secret Agent Man”, “Poor Side of Town”, “Baby I Need Your Lovin”, and “Summer Rain.” Johnny moved from New York City to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he was influenced by the distinctive style of Louisiana music. By the age of eight, Johnny had a guitar in his hands and was being taught how to play by his father. When Johnny entered junior high, he joined his first band named The Rockets. Johnny created his own band at the age of fourteen named Spades and they recorded on the Suede Label.
Johnny Rivers decided he would tour along the south part of America for the next couple of years alongside Brother Dave Gardner. He also had the opportunity to work alongside Roger Miller. Rivers met James Burton who recommended his song, “I’ll Make Believe”, to Ricky Nelson who wanted to record it. Throughout the recording process, Rivers found work as a studio musician at a nightclub in Hollywood. He played a jazz combo there where he gained instant popularity with the crowd. Rivers was offered a one-year contract with Elmer Valentine to open at the Whisky a Go-Go, on Sunset Strip in West Hollywood.
