Born and raised in Galveston County in Texas, Lee started playing in rock bands in high school and continued on his journey until he was a bona fide country-rock star. Fine tuning his performance skills in Texas nightclubs and bars, Lee sang covers entertaining guests throughout the 1960s.
His style developed and became a blend of rock, pop, country and Americana, a sound he helped find with the help of singer-songwriter Mickey Gilley. Lee worked with Gilley both on tour and at Gilley’s Club in Pasadena, TX. In 1980, the film Urban Cowboy catapulted Lee to stardom when his song “Lookin’ for Love” was used in the soundtrack and ultimately became a major crossover radio hit. The single spent three weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Country Singles chart while also reaching the top 5 in the overall Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
This kickstarted his commercial success, as he released a string of hits including “Bet Your Heart on Me” and “Hey Bartender”. Throughout the 80’s, Lee had 17 top 40 country hits. His duet with Lane Brody, “The Yellow Rose” was one of those hits and also became the theme song for a TV show of the same name. Lee toured extensively over the years, often with Mickey Gilley as a supporting act and member of his band.
