Scofield is best known for his work in a trio he formed with bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Adam Nussbaum, the trio's most acclaimed work being the album Bar Talk released in 1980.

Scofield's 2015 release Past Present went on to win a Grammy in 2016 for Best Jazz Instrumental Album and he remains an active force in the world of modern jazz. He currently serves as a faculty member in the Jazz Department at New York University's Steinhardt School of Education.
