Russel’s interest in music started when he attended Shaker Heights High School. Here he participated in band, orchestra, jazz, and theatrical productions. After he graduated from Williams College, John took private conducting lessons at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He also studied music and conducting at the Pierre Monteux School of Conductors. Russel’s first professional conducting job took place at the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras in Oberlin, Ohio. While he was working at the Orchestra, he also taught music at the local public school and stayed very involved with the students.
In 2010, Russel became the conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and conducted performances at the Music Hall and Riverbend Music Center. In May of 2011, Russel received an honorary degree for the growth of musical life at the University of Windsor. Russel served as a conductor at Windsor from 2001-2012 and conducted performances of forty-five world premiers that happened at the Windsor Canadian Music Festival. Russel conducted WSO’s first nationally televised production. John Russel has had a great career as a musical conductor and has won many awards including being a two-time recipient of Ontario’s Lieutenant Governor’s Award for the Arts. He also won the Ontario Arts Council’s Vida Peene Award for Artistic Excellence and the Herb Gray Harmony Award.
