Born in 1958, the New Jersey native got his first guitar as a Christmas gift and Gorka has never looked back since. John Gorka learned how to play the banjo and took his skills to his local church to perform in the folk music group, where he progressively got better in his trade.

Gorka began performing solo as an opening act for musicians like Nanci Griffith, Bill Morrissey and Jack Hardy after graduating from Moravian College in 1980 at Godfrey Daniels coffee house. Four years later, at the Kerrville Folk Festival, he was one of six winners chosen for the New Folk competition. This success has allowed him to regularly tour in Europe and North America.

With experience and talent under Gorka’s belt, he has released 14 albums from 1987 to his newest release in 2018. In addition to his highly well-known albums, he released a collector’s box with a DVD and companion CD called The Gypsy Life. Gorka’s achievements do not just stop there either as other well-known artists, like Mary Chapin Carpenter and Maura O’Connell, have recorded or performed John Gorka songs.
