Mitchell was born in El Paso, Texas and grew up on a variety of military bases around the world as the son of a U.S. Army major general. He attended school in Scotland and the United States before attending Northwestern Southern from 1981 to 1985 but dropped out before graduation to pursue acting.

In 2001 a film adaptation of the play was released and Mitchell won Best Director at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival.
