After high school, Grandsen performed as a sideman for acts such as Barry White, Glenn Miller, Aretha Franklin and the Moody Blues. After moving to New York City, he performed with acts such as Chico O’Farrill and Toshiko Akiyoshi. Grandsen performed with his own trio every week, which included Matt Hughes, former bassist for Betty Carter and Joe Cohn.
