Smith began performing in the early 2000s with her mother’s band before composing her own songs. In 2012, she formed the band Belle Ghoul with Christopher Tait, serving as the group’s keyboardist and lead vocalist and releasing a handful of albums through the Elefant Records label. The following year, she started the Tree Laboratory company with composer and producer Eric Hoegemeyer, a production company through which she composed the scores for a number of films including several for director Steven Sebring. In 2015, Smith received a Clio Image Award for her contributions to Sebring’s films.
In 2019, Smith released Songs from the Bardo through Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, a collaborative album with Tenzin Choegyal. The album was a No. 1 hit on Billboard’s New Age chart and earned a nod for the Grammy Award for Best New Age Album.
