After finishing her undergraduate work at Wellesley College, Kilbourne then pursued her doctorate in education at Boston University. She has also been given an honorary doctorate for her work by Westfield State College. She started to delve into the connection between advertising and health issues in the 1960s, such as misogyny, eating disorders such as bulimia and addiction.

She has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Myra Sadker Equity Award in 2005 and the Woman of Distinction Award from Miss Hall’s School in 2007.
