He began learning to play guitar at age seven, and by his teenage years had written his first country songs. As a young man, McCoy performed throughout Ontario with his band Three Quarter Country. His talents were discovered by songwriter Henry McGuirk, who helped the young artist secure a deal with MCA Records in 1995.
In the years that followed, McCoy became one of the most successful country music artists in Canada. In 2001, he won the Canadian Country Music Award for Male Vocalist of the Year–the first of many such accolades. Today, he boasts three SOCAN Song of the Year Awards, five Juno Award nominations for Best Country Male Vocalist and nearly twenty Canadian Country Music Award nominations.
