Jane Eugene was born on February 5, 1961. She is a singer/songwriter who came to prominence as a forming member of the British R&B group, Loose Ends. After leaving the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Steve Nichol formed the group. Loose Ends was a successful band that had several urban contemporary hits. The group, which was formed in London in 1980 and originally included vocalist Carl McIntosh, vocalist Jane Eugene, and keyboard player Steve Nichol, quickly gained popularity. Soon after, they were signed by Virgin Records.
The song's lyrics were written by Chris Amoo and Eddie Amoo, a pair of brothers who had previously enjoyed success in the UK Singles Chart with their band The Real Thing in the 1970s. In 1985, they scored their first hit with "Hangin' on a String," which reached number 1 on the US Billboard R&B chart, making Loose Ends the first black British band to do so. In 1990, due to disputes over the band's musical direction, the lineup altered as a result. Eugene and Nichol wanted to keep the group's sound, while McIntosh desired to be more experimental. The group reunited in 1998 to record a track with Pete Rock called "Take Your Time."
