Maddix got his start in comedy while he was in college when he was flipping through TV channels and began watching 100 Greatest Standups. Realizing that he wasn’t the only one to have those ideas, he decided to go with it. He even commemorated the fact that he wanted to be a comedian more than anything else, by getting a tattoo on his forearm. “That’s why I put it on my forearm, so I can’t work in a bank. I don’t want to be a bank teller, I want to be a comedian.”
He had another defining moment when comedian Jason Manford came to one of his classes to talk about standup. Maddix was invited up to try out some of his material, in which Manford told him that he didn’t need to be in university, he needed to be a comic. Maddix had been doing standup for a few years when he decided to commit to it fully for six months, writing all day before performing at three or four shows a night before going back home and writing more. At the end of those six months, it paid off and he received the 2014 Chortle student comedy award. He saw comedy as a way to vent and articulate his own frustrations. Recently, Maddix has become the front for a new documentary series on racial hatred via Viceland, a new TV network.
