Ithaca Ballet first started in 1961 when Vergiu Cornea led 12 dancers in its debut performance at Kulp Auditorium. A few of these dancers were Daphne Sola, Bente King, and Alice Reid. In 1968, Vergiu Cornea retired from the company, and Alice took over the position of artistic director. 1968 was also the year that Ithaca Ballet bought the building in which they are currently performing. In 1975, Ithaca Ballet joined the Northeast Regional Ballet Association, which now goes by the name Regional Dance America/Northeast.

Ithaca Ballet continues to grow, and it started hosting the Ballet Guild of Ithaca Dance Camp in 1983. Two years later in 1985, Alice started the Ballet Center of Ithaca. This center became the official school for Ithaca Ballet. Continuing to grow, the Ithaca Ballet won the New York State Arts Initiative Grant, and also performed at the Grassroots Festival, which takes place in Trumansburg, New York. Selling Ithaca Ballet tickets and the grant helped the ballet school grow to what it is today. In 2004, Alice Reid was awarded by the Tompkins County Foundation the Award of Excellence for Outstanding Volunteer Service to Community. The Ithaca Ballet has continued to teach dance, win awards and shine as a beacon of art in Tompkins County.
