The International Finals Rodeo, or IFR, was first held in 1971 at the Tulsa Assembly Center and served as the culminating event of the 1970 International Pro Rodeo Association, or IPRA, season.  The annual event continued to be held at Tulsa until being moved to Albuquerque, N.M., taking place at the Tingley Coliseum.

The rodeo moved back to Tulsa from 1975 to 1990, where it celebrated its twentieth anniversary. The event has moved multiple times since then but now is held in Oklahoma at the Laze E arena. The rodeo champions of the year are crowned by the IPRA at the IFR each January.

The Contract Skills Showcase gives stock performers a chance to demonstrate their skills to stock contractors. Events surrounding the rodeo include a Western trade show as well as The Annual Bucking Stock Sale, where bucking stock is displayed, auctioned and sold. The annual IPRA convention takes place as well. There is also the annual Miss Rodeo pageant during the proceedings.
