The Iowa High School Athletic Association, or IHSAA, sponsors a wrestling tournament annually to crown the best high school wrestlers in the state. The IHSAA is a full member of the National Federation of State High School Associations.

High school wrestlers compete in three classifications defined by the size of their schools. The largest 64 schools are classified 3A with the next 96 schools classified as 2A. The remaining 129 schools are classified as 1A. A further breakdown is done by weight class. The smallest weight class in IHSAA competition is 106. Each weight class is separated by six or seven pounds until 152 pounds, at which point the weight classes are increasingly separated with a sixty-pound differential between 220 and 285, the heaviest weight in the IHSAA.
