Mozart collaborated with Giambattista Varesco to bring the opera to life. Varesco adapted the libretto from the 1705 play by Crébillion père. Karl Theodor, the Elector of Bavaria in 1780 commissioned Mozart and Varesco to create the opera.

Idomeneo is set on the island of Crete in 1200 B.C. It takes place during the height of the Trojan War which was set off by the removal of Helen by Paris. King Agamemnon, the brother-in-law of Helen, leads a siege on the city of Troy to bring Helen to safety. The title character, Idomeneo, is one of the kings of Greece who assist Agamemnon. The opera centers around the relationship between King of Troy’s daughter and Idomeneo’s son.
