He is celebrated for playing the trumpet with four valves instead of three, which allows him to reach the quarter tones needed for Arab music. Based in Paris, he is a major star in French-language nations and several in the Middle East and he has toured successfully around the world.
Son of classical trumpeter Nassim Maalouf and pianist Nada Maalouf, he began to play the trumpet as a child and toured regularly through Europe performing with his father. After studying at the Conservatoire de Paris, he won prizes in several competitions with a first-place finish at the National Trumpet Competition in Washington, D.C. in 2001. He has performed and recorded with many other artists including Sting, bassist Vincent Segal, singer Vincent Delerm, saxophonist Rick Margitza, drummer Clarence Penn.
He released an eponymous album in 2008 followed by several other albums including 'Wind', which reached number 37 on Billboard's Jazz Albums Chart in 2013. He has a busy career as a teacher and he has composed and recorded movie soundtracks including 'Yves Saint Laurent' (2014). In 2018, he released 'Ibrahim Maalouf: Levantine Symphony No. 1', which was commissioned by the New Levant Initiative and debuted at Kennedy Center in Washington. His 2018 schedule included performances in Nice, France and Los Angeles, USA with dates set in 2019 in Boulogne-Billancourt and Mouitlleron-Le Captif in France.
