Hewitt was born in Akron in 1955, moving to Los Angeles as a young man to pursue a music career in earnest. His big break came in 1978 when he was recruited as the new lead singer for Shalamar, with whom he toured and recorded until 1985. With Shalamar Hewitt produced a slew of hits, including “Make That Move” and “Second Time Around.”
Following Shalamar’s breakup, Hewitt went on to enjoy a successful solo career. He signed to Elektra Records in 1986, through which he released his debut album, I Commit to Love. The album reached the top twenty on the R&B charts and yielded the number two hit song “I’m For Real.” His sophomore album Forever and Ever was a top ten R&B hit, and Hewitt enjoyed several charting singles through the 90s and early 2000s.
