The club evolved from an amateur club in Houston. It joined the MLR in its debut year of 2018 as a founding member. It is the first team in the MLR to build a stadium just for rugby. Rugby-specific Aveva Stadium opened in 2019 and has a capacity of 4,000. The Sabercats played their regular-season games in 2018 at Dyer Stadium and while work on Aveva Stadium was being completed in 2019, played some games at Constellation Stadium.

He had coached for Dungannon RFC and the United States national rugby team. The Sabrecats’ first official game was against the New Orleans Gold, losing 25-35. The first win for the team was against the Austin Elite, defeating them 50-38.
