The Hot Buttered Rum String Band was founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2002 with a vision of playing a high-energy, avant-garde style of bluegrass music. The band found a degree of regional fame following the release of their debut album Live at the Freight and Salvage later that year. Shortly afterward, they became a highly sought-after act in and around the city of San Francisco, headlining prominent venues like The Filmore and appearing alongside high-profile group artists like Ben Harper, Chris Thile and Peter Rowan.
