The Holiday Spectacular is a yearly performance by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra which takes place at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. In addition to a curated selection of traditional Christmas classical music, the Holiday Spectacular features themed dance numbers and moments of audience interaction.
It has become a staple of the local holiday celebrations and is known for drawing in a wider audience than the orchestra’s usual performances. The production is directed by Broadway veteran Andy Einhorn and features collaborations between the orchestra and the Baltimore Choral Arts Society.
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra was created in 1916 as part of a local expansion of government outreach programs. Though the organization has since moved into the private sector, the orchestra is still known for its engagement with the needs of the community. The BSO has developed four separate outreach programs to bring classical music to inner-city youth. The orchestra’s Holiday Spectacular is part of its larger effort to make classical music more accessible.
