The original American production starred renowned actors like Len Cariou, George Segal, and Richard Benjamin. The story is set in the summer of 1959 in France at a retirement home for veterans. The majority of the play takes place on the terrace of a garden outside of the veteran hospital where the three protagonists plot their escape. The play heavily emphasizes messages of needing to escape the restraints of life and the long-lasting impact of wars on veterans.
