The band was founded in 1994 by singer Jared Gomes and guitarist Wes Geer, who had met in Orange County’s punk rock scene. They named the nascent group Hed Pe, an abbreviation for Higher Education Planetary Evolution. Hed Pe quickly amassed a dedicated regional following and signed to Jive Records in 1997.

Later that year they released their self-titled debut album, which met with limited commercial success despite critical praise. They would break through to mainstream attention with the release of their sophomore album Broke in 2000, which was a charting hit on the Billboard 200 and the Billboard Mainstream and Modern Rock charts. The following year Hed Pe would perform alongside bands like Korn and System of a Down on the Ozzfest Tour. 

Hed Pe refers to their style of music as “G-punk,” a term they invented for their combination of hip hop and gangsta rap elements on the one hand with punk rock and heavy metal elements on the other.
