Headley was born in Barataria in 1974, moving to the United States as a teenager. In high school, she sang in the show choir, then studied musical theatre at Northwestern University. In 1996 her professional career began when she was cast in the Toronto production of Ragtime. Her performance earned her roles in the Broadway productions of Lion King and Aida, the latter of which saw her win the Tony Award for Best Actress.
In 2002 Headley released her debut album This Is Who I Am through RCA Records, earning nods for the Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. In 2006 the lead single from her sophomore album In My Mind reached the number one spot on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart.
In 2009 Headley sang alongside Josh Groban for President Obama’s inauguration, then the following year won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album.
