Zhang is a classical pianist whose poise and grace surrounding the ivory keys earned him a first-place win at the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009. To acknowledge his piano prowess, the artist received an Avery Fish Career Grant. 

Zhang was introduced to the piano just before the age of four. Within two short years, the child prodigy gave his first recital at the Shanghai Music Hall. He wowed judges with timeless renditions of Haydn and Mozart sonatas. Additionally, the young artist mastered 15 of Bach’s two-part inventions. Two-part inventions are a collection of short keyboard compositions studied by musicians worldwide. 

Haochen Zhang has also performed Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 K. 467, backed by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in the heart of his hometown. He has toured throughout much of China, performing the music of Beethoven and Chopin, and won the Fourth International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians. Zhang has made appearances at the 49th International Chopin Festival in Duszniki, Poland, and attended the Curtis Institute of Music in America, studying under the tutelage of Gary Graffman.
